About Jack Valerio

Throughout my life, one purpose has remained constant: helping people discover abilities they may not have known they possessed, or may not have believed they could develop.

For 42 years, I pursued that purpose in education. As a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and assistant to the superintendent, I had the privilege of working with thousands of students, parents, teachers, and administrators. Sharing knowledge, encouraging growth, helping people solve problems, and watching them succeed brought me tremendous satisfaction.

When I retired, that purpose didn't end. It simply found a new expression through writing.

My first book, Uncommon Sense, grew out of a lifetime of observing that many of life's best answers are often hidden by assumptions, habits, and conventional thinking. My hope was to encourage readers to look at familiar situations with fresh eyes, think more clearly, and discover better ways of making everyday decisions.

The Guaranteed Gourmet series is, in many ways, Uncommon Sense applied to the preparation of food. Every recipe is carefully designed not simply to produce an excellent meal, but to remove unnecessary obstacles, reduce uncertainty, and help people cook with skill and confidence. The detailed instructions, thoughtfully organized workflow, readiness checklists, visual cues, and countless other design decisions all serve one purpose: giving the greatest number of readers the greatest opportunity to succeed. My hope is that each recipe not only produces wonderful food, but also helps people discover they are capable of accomplishing far more in the kitchen than they may have imagined.

People sometimes assume that writing books is about selling books.

For me, nothing could be further from the truth.

I have never viewed my books as a business or as an investment. The time, effort, and expense required to create them are simply part of doing something I believe is worthwhile. Whether I ever recover those costs has never been my measure of success.

I've never thought of my books as monuments to their author. I think of them as living tools. Long after I'm gone, they can continue encouraging people, building confidence, and helping readers discover abilities they may not have known they possessed. Everything I have accomplished in my own life has been shaped by parents, teachers, friends, colleagues, and mentors who helped me discover abilities I didn't yet see in myself. These books are my way of passing that gift forward.

Like everyone else, I want to enjoy each day to the fullest. I enjoy dancing, spending time with the woman I love, continuing to learn, and doing the things that give purpose and meaning to my life. Writing has become one of my greatest joys because it allows me to continue the work that has defined my life by creating something that can continue helping others for years to come, whether they are people I have known for decades or people I will never have the privilege of meeting.

If, years from now, someone opens one of my books and finds an idea, a recipe, or a way of thinking that genuinely enhances his or her life, then I will know I have accomplished exactly what I set out to do.
